in media representations are often broad, and can be made about:
- Class
-Age
-Gender
-Ethnicity
-Disability
These CAGED representations are useful starting points for analysing media messages. They however do not include religion, regional identity, or education.
Stereotypes are a over exaggerated version of a person or group of people

Stuart Hall
Stuart halls representation theory claims that media representations do not simply reflect reality but actively create meaning through systems of signs and symbols, a process he calls encoding.
Hall argued that meaning is produced, not discovered, through representation. Media used language, images and symbols to create a reality that is interpreted by audiences.He encourages people to critically analyse media, question the creators intentions and identify the power dynamics at play in the construction of meaning.
Illustrating that meaning is not inherent but culturally constructed.
